Tantus was born in 1998 when the adult toy industry was very different. It didn’t take the company long to shake things up.
The original vision from Metis Black was to create art house sexual products. At the time, there were less than 10 manufacturers of silicone sex toys worldwide. Silicone toys were sold at better women’s boutiques with muted or pastel color options. They were that way because they were all made using a tin silicone with a white base material. “Here was silicone, the safest material for soft sex toys, and you had to be an ‘in the know’ feminist in a big city like San Francisco, Chicago, New York or Boston to know about it,” says Black. “It was my mission to change that.”
Another part of the mission was educating the world about what was in many of the toys that were on the market at the time. PVC was (and still is) a common material. It’s perfectly safe when it’s hard like your underground water pipes, but to make a soft toy you need to use plasticizers to soften it and that’s where phthalates come in. A PVC sex toy is typically made of 35-75% phthalates, which have been linked to breast cancer, endocrine disruption, birth defects, allergies and other health problems.
Tantus uses a platinum based silicone, which is more expensive but also of a far superior, medical-grade quality. All Tantus toys are hypoallergenic, non-toxic and free of phthalates. They are also made to last a lifetime with minimal care. Silicone is odorless, boilable, bleachable and even dishwasher safe.
The Tantus product line grew quickly and continues to expand to this day. Tantus toys are designed with anatomical considerations that emphasize comfort and maximum pleasure.
Needless to say, the response to toys that are safe, green, sexy and fun has been extraordinary. Tantus is now the largest producer of silicone sex toys in America, and growing by leaps and bounds. Even with all that growth, the company still has a very personal relationship with all its distributors, retailers and individual customers. With the guidance of Black and CEO Michael Blacksmith and the values they have set in place, Tantus is poised to bring "Good Clean Fun" to an ever-growing audience.
